100L Macro with Ring Flash

Gregory, don't worry, you have a similar issue with the

180L, never noticed an issue. On the 100L I suspect a lot of

the front element size over the 100 classic is for the IS

function anyway.

Chances are if you are using flash with a macro lens you

will be well stopped down so the size of the flash is

irrelevant.

Just a note that ring flash in general produces (as it is supposed to) a very flat light. This is often more suitable for one of its earliest applications, dentistry, than it is for three-dimensional objects.

Some ring lights have the ability to vary the light from side to side to allow more modeling. Depending on what you're using the light for, you may want to look into options offered on ring lights and other closeup lighting options (e.g., http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Macro-Twin-Lite-MT-24EX-Flash-Review.aspx )
