lee_shively
Personally, I'd prefer the collar.
anthony_sidwell
I have this combination, and the collar is definately worth it.
brian_torio
Raghu - The collar is not "required," but I, too, find it helpful. If you plan on using teleconverters or extension tubes, Canon recommends using the collar. One note worth making is that there are two versions of the collar: one is black and one is white. For some reason, the white one costs more, but then again it doesn't match. Hope that helps.
PuppyDigs
Actually the black tripod ring "A" matches perfectly with the EF 70-200 4L USM. Why? The zoom and focus rings are also black so the collar blends right in. It looks like it's original equipment. The main advantage of the tripod ring is the ability to change quickly from horizontal and vertical formats. This lens is so light balance is a minor consideration. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
d_l1
Are you using teleconverters? If so, you should get the collar.

isaac sibson
If you were using it on a boosted EOS 3 or 1/n/v then you'd get away without using the collar. On a rebel? I wouldn't be happy....
steve_dunn2
Required? No. Advisable? Yes. You'll improve the balance, and you'll also be reducing stress on the plastic lensmount. The 70-200/4 isn't an extremely heavy lens, but it's not a lightweight, either.
