I received an e-mail offer from Adobe for 30 percent off of Photoshop CS5 (comes to $489) (but just through today). Is this a good deal? Does Adobe offer this discount regularly (or at least occasionally)?
Is there any legitimate way to get Photoshop for less than this? Are the offers to purchase older versions of Photoshop on eBay likely to be legitimate?
Thanks, Martin

Qualify for educational pricing by enrolling in class(es). Can even be just a single night class...

+1 for Brad's suggestion. You can buy the entire CS5 design standard suite for under $300 -- instead of $1300 -- under their student program. Go to their site to read the details.

Well, I would guess that even a single class at a local community college would cost about $300, so that plus the $150 or so for the educational edition would bring me within the price range of Photoshop CS5, I think. Am I wrong?

PS CS5 is now almost 18 mos. old. It debuted April 30, 2010.
(CS4 shipped initially on 11/1/2008) (CS3 was April 2007)
So yes -- CS6 (i.e., PS ver. 13.0) is due any day now but I have not seen much of any Beta news on it.

Cause those that know can’t say and those that don’t know say lots of wrong stuff...
IF you need CS5 now, its a good deal, go for it. Waiting for the next version to come is silly and unproductive. You all can read whatever you wish into the tea leaves.

Martin - if you already own a registered copy of Photoshop CS3 or better - you can get an upgrade to CS5 for $199. When CS6 comes out all bets are off, although historically Adobe has offered deals 2 versions back.

Martin, have you considered Lightroom?

It may be all you need, and actually can offer a lot more. Today it's rare when I have to drop into

photoshop...

I reveived an offer from Adobe to upgrade to CS5 from Photoshop Elements vs 9 for only $299 about a month ago. I waited a long time for this having passed up CS3 and CS4. I'm still using the CS2 student version which I purchased for about $279 7 years ago, so this is a great deal !
