greg
i have a rare opportunity to take a one week vacation in mid november and i would love to make it into a wildlife/scenic photography trip. i would prefer to keep it in the western united states. i guess i will be renting some sort of sport utility vehicle. my first thought was yellowstone, but wouldn't it be mostly innaccessable that time of year? thanks for the help-greg

don_baccus
Bosque would be good, the "festival of the cranes" is about the last week in November. The beach at Asilomar is great for shooting shorebirds in winter, and Point Reyes and the like have sea otters to shoot, and there are whale-watching boats to take, etc. Neither of these places require a sport utility vehicle. Monterey area has expensive lodging, Soccoro (near Bosque) $25 motels and it's an hour from the Very Large Array if you're into shooting really cool technostuff.
There are all sorts of places to consider. How about the desert southwest? In places like Canyonlands you can actually justify the renting of a sport utility vehicle. Arches/Canyonlands...or Zion/Bryce...are great landscape shooting places. philg
The Southwest is perfect this time of year. You get some colors in the trees. The light has a nice angle even towards midday. The temperatures are mild (70s).
brad_mills
I went to Rocky Mountain National Park a few years ago. Many big horn rams were near one of the enterences near Estes Park. Also deer and elk. It was head banging time for the Rams and they were more approachable than other times of the year. A 300mm lens gave almost full frame body shots with patience. A few examples are at -
my personal web page
The weather, for me was good, I was worried about snow, but luckily missed a storm by a week. The crowds were non-existent.
ShunCheung
There have been quite a few questions about "where should I go at such and such time of the year." At the end of the book "The Nature of America" by David Middleton et. al. (ISBN 0817449949), they have a list of suggested places in North America to visit for every month of the year. Bosque del Apache is in that list for November.
steve_ralser
Festival of the Cranes is nov 19-22. (in addition to the Festival of the Crayons - which this year I have been told will include a Whooping Crayon - if you are here for the cranes you will see the crayons on School of Mines Road). The URL lists the program for anyone that is interested
http://www.nmt.edu/mainpage/festival/homepage.html
