anil_m
I am planning to buy Tamron 17-50 ( 2.8) for my D7000. Which version shall I buy? Also , at 50mm is it as good as Nikon 50 (1.8)?
breogan_gomez
I only had the second version. The first one is considered the best but you need a body that has a built-in AF motor (like D50, D70, D80, D90, D200, D300, D700 and all the D1,2,3 models)

I do also have the 50/1.8 and the prime is better, in my opinion, than the Tamron. Pictures look more clear, with saturated colors and apparent definition. I even made a test with tripod comparing the primes I had at that time with the Tamron and the primes were better than the zoom in corner to corner sharpness and colors (24/2.8 AI, 28/2 AIS, 50/1.8AF and 105/2.5AI).
Wouter Willemse
Optically, the 17-50 f/2.8 without VC (VR in Tamron speak) is regarded highest, but obviously the VC version adds the convenience of anti-shake and is still a high-regarded lens.
Your D7000 will work with any version of the lens.
oded bar-el
I have the non-VC version on my D300s and mostly happy with it. It happens only rarely that I miss VC (VR) with that lens.
I also have the 50 1.8 and it's much better (sharper) to my opinion. It's so small that I usually carry it with me anyway and if I find myself shooting mostly at the 50mm range, I put it on.
daverhaas
D7000 has the built in af motor. D5100, D5000, D3100, D3000 do not.

I have the non-VC version of the lens and I love it.

Dave
nishnishant
I had tried 2 copies of the VC version on my D80 and had problems with both. The focusing was off in one, and both gave me connection errors with the camera. The same problems have been reported for the D90 too in many forums. So be sure to do some research on that.

Christopher Sperry Photogr
I have the original 17-50 for my D80, and am happy with it. I shoot hand-held and tripod mounted with the lens. For my use, VC isn't necessary at these focal lengths. With the D7000 you have more options to increase ISO to minimize the results of camera instability.
nishnishant
Where VC would come in handy is if you are hand-holding and dragging the shutter. Based on what I remember, the VC worked great even at 1/15s and I believe Tamron's VC is slightly superior to Nikon's VR II.
hans_janssen
I love my screwdriver Af 17-50 on my D2h, it is just not that good as the Nikkor pixelpeeping wise, and the AF is just a fast as fast AFS lenses on a D2h.
mtk
I have used mine on my D80 and my D90 with no "Issues" whatsover. It is my workhorse lens and rarely comes off. My only problem was the front element coming slightly loose which was promptly repaired under warranty. Highly recommend this lens.
anil_m
Thanks all. So shall I need to keep 50 ( 1.8) in case am getting 17-50 n0n-VC version?
oded bar-el
I would say "Yes, definitely". The price you'll get for this lens as used doesn't seem like worth selling it, and personally, when shooting mostly at 50mm without needing the wide focal, I prefer using that one as it's sharper, faster and smaller
chris_lindsey
I have the D-7000 and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 with stablization combination and can honestly say it is hard to beat for the money. If your not going to go pro or have the need to start an all Nikkor lense collection it should serve your purposes fine.

munim
I bought the 50/1.8 first, then the 18-55 then the Tamron (second version, no-VC, BIM).... After buying the Tamron, I found little use for the both of the previous lenses save for the occasional macro shot using a close-up attachment. Now I'm looking for people wanting to trade their 35/1.8 for the 50 + 18-55.
kohanmike
I'm a pro and I use the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC with my D300s, also the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 on a second D300s (and likely go to the OS version when it comes out).
