jeff_singer
I'm interested in getting an A16 back when I get my hasselblad but looking though the posts here I'm a little confused about the orientation of the shot when using the A16 back (using the waist level viewfinder). Is it vertical or horizontal? Also, what are the differences in the different generations of backs (A12 and A16)? I see mention of "new style" and "old style." Are there significant differences? Thanks, Jeff
jerry_lehrer
Jeff Horizontal. It would be a miracle in topology to get 16 verticalnegatives on a 120 roll when the film rolls vertically in a H'bladfilm magazine. There was a weird A12V magazine for TWELVE vertical negatives ona 120 roll. It's easier to crop a 6x6cm negative. Jerry
ted_ylauan
The latest style backs A or E series all have dark slide holders built-in mounted on the back of the magazine, the black plastic slide holder covers the whole rear-end of the magazine. bas1
Like the previous poster said, the newer have darkslide holder at the back when not in use. Very handy and one of those "why didn't they think of this before" things. If you can get the newer ones, no stop posting, get your Blad and start posting pics. :-)
gene crumpler
You can get a stick-on slide holder from B&H for $15. Very handy.
keith_laban
Why not get yourself a set of Hasselblad format masks. Only £15. Far more flexible. Shoot 6x6 6x45 6x3 all on the same film, landscape or portrait orientation and never have to turn the camera. Easily the best 15 Quid I've ever spent! q.g._de_bakker
Keith, You asked why not buy a £15 format mask? Because it will not help you do anything that you can't do without it. ;-) On the contrary: you can crop a full 6x6 frame in many different ways, if you so want; a format mask will limit you to a "pre-cropped" format. keith_laban
Cropped transparencies.....I HATE THEM! Also, clients HATE THEM!!
cg
I want the 645 masks! Why? Because some clients just cant get their head around the square format. Some clients have trouble with the idea of cropping prints (too much abstract thinking). Some clients prefer to see the final crop on the transparencies (using silver tape is too messy for them). I love the square but I love getting paid even more.
keith_laban
Well said Chris.
gary voth
The obvious reason to prefer an A16 back over the format masks is that you avoiding "wasting" four frames per roll of 120 film. The Hasselblad does not normally handle so well in vertical mode. You will need a 90 degree prism finder of course. I also recommend you get a body that is compatible with Hassy Winder CW. The right hand grip makes the ergonomics not too different from modern 645 cameras (thought the Hassy "V" is bulkier and heavier and the lenses do not handle so quickly). keith_laban
Mmmmmm.......Buy a Hasselbald A16 back, plus a 90 degree prism finder, plus a Hasselblad CW body, plus a winder. Or spend 15 quid on a set of format masks and waste a little film. No contest. :-)
q.g._de_bakker
Mmmmmm.......Don't buy a Hasselbald A16 back, plus a 90 degree prism finder, plus a Hasselblad CW body, plus a winder, and spend 15 quid on a set of format masks and waste a little film. Or not even spend 15 quid on a set of masks. No contest. :-)
