camera recommendations from 1958 magazine

Recommended Posts

The entire PDF file is the June issue of the 1958 Playboy magazine, which I only read for the articles and interviews. They actually have some legit stuff as well as those disgusting playmates. I don't thin a link would be useful to you because it requires a non-free downloader. The only think I know how to do with a PDF is open it and read it. If there were a way that I could convert individual pages to jpegs, I would post them. I don't have a personal web site so I can't post it there.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I will take a photo of the first page and include it here.

00Z3mJ-381055584.jpg.1bd92112697999964efaa2665589ee8c.jpg

In the meantime, people who are interested in old camera guides, catalogs, and recommendations can find a number of these at Butkus' site. He has much more than just camera manuals.

Here is a link: http://www.cameramanuals.org/chinon/catalogs_photo.htm

but at the moment of posting this he apparently is having some server problems, so the above may be his backup site - check Google, etc.

I found the immediately following article about shooting your own playmate interesting. Their photographers preferred TLRs and Anscochrome.
I wonder if Anscochrome was chosen over Kodachrome because of its high speed or because of its softer color and contrast.
I'll quote in part for those of you who cannot get the file to download, or do not wish to see the accompanying photos:

"Recommended for Playmate photography is any good twin-lens reflex camera (that's what we used). You'll want to load the box with a fast color film like, Super Anscochrome Tungsten. Lighting should be kept sweet and simple: a pair of speedlights - or, lacking these, photo-floods - bounced off the ceiling, will give you flattering diffused light. Place your keylight (main source) above the lady, directed down upon her at a 45 degree angle, from an aproximate distance of six feet. About eight feet from her, set up your fill in light, a foot or so to the side of the camera, slightly above the lens. ...your exposure should be around 1/30 second at f5.6 - fast enough to freeze small movements and sharp enough to allow for small deviations from the prefocused point between shutter snappings"
