I don't want to hijack KP Karunakaran's earlier question regarding Importing NRW files from Nikon P7000 into Lightroom 3, but I have a related question.
I am considering the P7000 as a second camera when I don't want to lug my Nikon D700. I've been curious about the NRW suffix on the RAW files. What is the difference between NRW and NEF RAW files, and can NRW files be imported into and processed in LR3?
I would assume NRW files would import into NIKON NX2, and could then be saved as TIFF and imported into LR 3 as TIFF, but that sounds cumbersome and would use a lot of computer resources.
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Good question, Gary. I've often wondered why Nikon went with .NRW instead of .NEF as well. I haven't had any issues working with .NRW files though, they seem to be recognized by all the apps I've tried them with (NX2, CS5, etc). I import them with NX2 and then open them up in CS5 as TIFF files. Works well for me. Helps to have a lot of RAM (my iMac has 8gb).

I use Adobe Camera Raw in CS5 to process .NRW files from the P7000. It works just fine. I understand LR3 has the same raw processing engine so one would think it should work fine too, though the earlier post suggests that may not be correct.

The problem I have had is that Windows Explorer sometimes crashes when showing .NRW files. I posted an inquiry about it here, but no one responded. It's still a puzzle.

Light room and photoshop use the same processing (Adobe Camera Raw) engines. So no worries.

@Kent - Windows typically does a bad job of recognizing any Raw file formats. It won't / can't / doesn't read any NEF files that I've ever saved. (D70, D200, D300, D700, D7000) The only way I can do RAW on windows is to use Picassa from Google.

Kent, David,
To make RAW images have thumbnails in Explorer, like JPEG and TIFF have, you can install the Nikon NEF Codec, for Vista and 7. This can be downloaded from the Nikon site, and it's updated on roughly the same interval as ViewNX 2/Capture NX2. For Windows XP, Microsoft has a RAW Thumbnail add-on downloadable, but since that's a quite old download I am not too sure whether NRW files are supported there.

Without such add-ons, Windows does no job recognising RAW files at all ;-)

I have the NEF codec—no problems with it or with NEF files in general. I used to have the NRW codec, and it worked too. When Windows Explorer started choking on NRW files, Microsoft's suggested solution was to download the latest version of the NEF codec, which didn't seem to make any sense, though I tried it anyway. It wouldn't install for some reason (I forget what the error message said). Then when Windows Explorer continued to crash when trying to display NRW files (even as a "list" or "details," with no thumbnail), I uninstalled the NRW codec. Had at least one Windows Explorer shutdown even after that though none lately. Fingers crossed.

This is my first real frustration with much-maligned Vista.

Gary,
You might have seen an answer to your question from all these responses - it appears that Lightroom 3.4 works fine with NRW (I am told rightly or wrongly that it is the camera manufacturer that has to make the software compatible - hence the delay may actually be due to Nikon). BTW, why Nikon has two raw formats, who knows?
That said, I like the P7000 - bought it recently as a second to the D700 and has many features of dslrs but can be carried in a pocket. I live in Sydney, Oz but was on a recent holiday in the USA including New Orleans - only carried my p7000 for travel pictures. Easy to shoot street scenes (built in lens roughly equals 28-200 on dslr) without intimidation.
Thanks to all who responded to my question.
