Mamiya 7 ii Goes to Portugal

These are from my new (to me) Mamiya 7 ii. These are the best shots from my first 6 rolls. Most of these are pure Velvia 50, with no modification except some cropping. The wide lens was the 43mm, and the normal was the 80mm. Almost everything was taken on a lightweight Slik tripod.

I'm pretty happy with the results! I got lots of junk, but maybe 10% good shots. Not bad for a first outing.

Please chime in with your thoughts on how to improve. Thanks! And thanks for the advice earlier that encouraged me to buy this setup!

I think your posted shots look pretty good for a first outing. I'd like to encourage you. The Mamiya 7ii is also my travel companion and I have much to say in praise of it. What lens were you using for these shots? Did you use a tripod for the low-light situations? I often use a handheld light meter when shooting transparency films. This allows me to fine tune the exposure settings and eliminates the need for a lot of 'bracketing'. But, I have found the on-board meter in the Mamiya to be reliable and easy to use. My only complaint is that the electronic shutter release can sometimes fire before you're ready so one must be careful about how much pressure one applies when taking meter readings and then composing in the 'AEL' mode. Enjoy the new system and happy shooting!

Lenses were the 43mm and 80mm. When I zoom to 800% on the original files, there is no chromatic abberation at all (even in the corners), which is a relief after even good 35mm Nikon primes having given me trouble.

I used a tripod for virtually everything, which allows me to use the self timer to fire without shake. I only hand-hold for people in street scenes. I trusted the Mamiya metering as a spot meter, which worked in most situations, though the Velvia exposure latitude blew out to the light or dark sides sometimes.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just a moderately skilled amatuer, but really enjoying the equipment, the film, and time with my hobby.

Nice photos. I liked the first and fifth photos.

Using the 43mm is a bit of a challenge. I always have to double check to make sure that I have the horizontal line in

the viewfinder lined up with the subject to avoid skewing.

Keep shooting and reviewing your photos. Hope to see more of your work.
