michaelwalter
Maybe I misread something. I was using my new (well, new to me) D90 yesterday. I would push the shutter release halfway and it would focus. Holding the shutter release I would recompose the frame and... it would refocus! I think it should hold the focus as long as the shutter release is being held halfway down, right? I do have the focus point set to the center point.
Since I am not the original owner, I have no warranty on it. So, use multiple focus points, use the AE/FL lock, or send it in for repair. Does that about sum it up? Or, is there a menu setting that I overlooked?
jean_yves_mead
Do you by any chance have it set for continuous AF?
jay_poel
AF mode should be set to AF-S - Single servo Mode.

Hold the AF button down (the one on top at right rear corner beside the top LCD) and rotate the main command wheel (the rear one) until the display reads AF-S.
richardsnow
Agreed. Your D90 is set to Continuous Auto Focus...

To change your AF settings hold the AF Button near the top LED screen and turn the dial on the rear of the camera until AF-S shows on the top LED.

RS
michaelwalter
I do believe it is set to AF-C. Nice catch, folks! I will change it when I get home.
goldbergbarry
You might consider getting a guide for the D90. Ken Rockwell has a good guide on his site (Google his name to find him). All he asks for is a $5 optional donation. I found his guide to be very helpful when I got my D90.
michaelwalter
I have a guide. I think I may have set if to AF-C after watching some "guru" on YouTube extoll the virtues of it.
hans_janssen
You can set the AF to the AF-on button, what is for the D90 the AEL/AFL button, and disconnect the AF from the exposure button.
jay_poel
Just a little extra info: the AF-A mode on the D90 does a pretty fine job of switching from single servo to continuous based on how the camera processes the scene/motion. I use it most of the time. I use AF-C for sports mainly.

As KR says about AF-A " It's my favorite because the D90 is so smart that it figures out if your
subject is moving or still, and automatically selects the correct mode above for
each shot!"
michaelwalter
Well, the AF-C was the issue. I'm amazed at how quickly you folks came up with the problem. :-) For the time being, it is set on AF-S as I am not doing any "motion" shots.
