bjornholland
Hi,

This coming summer I would like to visit the Hoover Dam, and also (more important to me) the "Nevada Solar One" solar power plant.
Is it possible to just show up at the gate for a (guided) visit? Or is it only possible through official tour operators?
craig_gillette
Hoover Dam should be no problem. Check here:

http://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/

Not familiar with the solar plant.
frank_skomial
Not log time ago I visited Davis Dam, just to get away from the casinos for a moment. Not particularly pretty for pictures.
After parking car in the adjucent large gravel area and getting out, I noticed that some kind of security or state trooper vehicle quickly came over just to watch what I was shooting, what equipment we had etc.
I said something like "Hello!", or "Good Evening!", and he answered the same way, but had nothing else to do just watching me and my wife taking pictures of the water and surroundings. Being kind of uneasy, we carefully did not turn our cameras at the Dam installation, mechanism or mechanical facilities they had there, and returned back to our car after just few minutes.
Then we drove off, and his car followed us back to the main interstate road.
My wife and I look like white people, perhaps one would call the race European Americans, not celebrity, dressed casually... to blend with the Casino bunch.
bjornholland
Thanks for the link, Craig.
Wow – $2000 fee for 'commercial photography'. Does that include stock? It probably does... They must think photographers are all stinking rich.
david_daniel
Commercial photography would be when you are setting up a shoot, with a model or props. I'm sure tons of photos of Hoover Dam have been published world wide that the Corps didn't get a penny for.
pasi_h_gg
Casual photogaphy w/o tripod was no problem at Hoover dam at my last visit. That was before 9/11, though. What a swell trip, I'm jealous. Pasi
