robert_premkumar
I am having a Nikon D300. The AF assist illumionator is not working. I find it difficult whenever I try to focus objects during night. In the settings, AF assist illuminator is in the on position. In spite of this the problem persists. What is the possible reason for this? Kindly enlighten.
Michael R Freeman
Which autofocus mode do you have set on the switch next to the lens mount ... S or C? The autofocus assist light only works when in Single-servo autofocus mode (S).
jay_poel
Maybe the AF assist lamp is burned out? You could try setting the 10s shutter delay and taking a shot - the AF illuminator should flash as it counts down (my D90 does). Not sure what else to add. This would at least let you know if it works at all.
lornesunley
You not only have to have the focus mode set to S but you also have to have the center focus point selected.
robert_premkumar
Michael, the setting is in S only. Jay, as suggested by you, I tried shutter delay and the illminator promptly flashed. That means the lamp is not burnt out. Still I am scratching my head.
robert_premkumar
Lorne,
Your suggestion solved my problem. After selecting the centre focus point the illuminator started working. Thank you very much for your timely and illuminating help. I am relieved. Thanks a lot Lorne.
Thank you Michael and jay.

Regards.
hans_janssen
When you have a SB800 you can that as IR AF assist by switching off the flash part of the flash.
