single focus mulit-directional focus

Hi,
I just got my 7d last night and am in the process of learning it and reading the manual. I havent figured out yet how to use the multi-directional to select a focus point without having to first press the manual focus button. On my 40D I would just move the stick to where I wanted and it went. It does it on the 7D as well, but so far only when I press the manual focus button first. Am I missing something?
Thanks!

The 7D has 5 different focus modes. User selection of AF points works in 4 of them, but not in auto selection mode. If

you've in auto select mode you need to choose one of the other 4 AF modes and then use the joystick to select your fav

AF point(s). With the 40D you could be in auto select mode and choose an AF point by simply moving the joystick. Wish

7D auto select mode worked like the 40D but it ain't so.

However, you can assign a favorite point and AF mode to a couple of the buttons. I have the center point, spot AF,

assigned to the DOF button. NO matter what AF mode I'm in, pressing DOF selects the center point. Release it, and I'm

back in the prior mode.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.
