adam_jeppesen
Traveling to Sahara, I want to get a set af filters that help give to dry dessert sky some life. I've been looking at lee filters. Are they the best for a trip like this? What else could be recodmented? Has anyone ever been to Marotania? dr._steven_bein
I believe Lee are plastic. Lots of sand there. Consider the glass, they will scratch less. You might want a strong warming filter, like an 85B to really pump up the hot feeling of the sands. An ND grad, to handle the light levels of sky to sand, etc
rayn
Lee filters are plastic. Unless you really need BIG filters, stick with glass.
knut_sverre_horn
Graduated grey and a warm-up seems an excellent advise. Never travel without a polarizer, though! I am satisfied with Lee myself. They probably scratch a little more easy than glass, but you have to look after your filters extremely carefully in an environment full of sand anyway, so maybe it doesn't make that much of a difference? The important thing is that yoy can move the graduated filter vertically in its holder, positioning the graduation exactly where you want it and not just in the middle. :-) Knut-Sverre Horn, Norway
paul_ashton
I second the previous post - take a polarizer. Despite its reputation as a sun-drenched desert, the Sahara has tremendous mood changes so you are wise to be thinking of a range of filters. Watch out for the famous red dust storms that can block out the sun and sky for days. Mauritania is a muslim country so remember to honor their codes when near people. clivecc
I suggest for Lee : 1. ND grad 0.6 and 0.9 2. Sunset (grad warmup) 3. Pink grad comes in handy sometimes 4. Coral and Tobacco are also quite good in some applications.
dfdncithekxlbn8kaglf33
There has been plenty of discussion in the Q&A archive that Lee and Hi-tech filters are indentical in quality, or nearly the same, but with a price difference favoring the Hi-techs. If you go with the Lee holder, a good idea, you might consider getting most of your filters via Hi-tech.
