charlie_charlie2
I've never printed a picture on my own. Actually, I never had a picture printed before aside from the usual duane reade. Don't really have an idea on what to look for. I just want the output to look good. Problem is the budget is a bit tight. Hopefully, less than $400. Also, what software do you guys use?
I just got a Nikon D300S. I have a mac with photoshop and lightroom.
Thanks!
diane_madura
If you are in the U.S., Charlie, I might suggest the Epson R1900. I have the older version, the R1800, and I have been very happy with it. I believe the quality of the prints is about as good as it gets. I've had it since the model was brand new and have never had a problem with it.

The Epson R1900 has a 13 inch carriage and can print panos (up to 36 inches long, I believe) that are 13 inches high. If you are considering a printer that only prints up to 8.5 X 11, I think you will find that once you begin printing, there will be times that you'd like to print larger. www.atlex.com sells this printer for $489 (I'm not in any way affiliated with them). There is a $200 rebate right now, but I don't know if that price already reflects the $200 rebate. Oh, and free shipping.

One thing that you might want to think about when selecting a printer is does that printer excel in color prints only? That printer would not be a good one for you if you print a lot of black and white. The Epson R1800 is better at color, I don't know about the R1900. I print color almost exclusively.

I use Photoshop to print.

There are other brands of nice printers out there, but I cannot recommend any of them since my only experience has been with Epson.
chas_frady
You can also look for a lightly used or refurbished Epson 2880. There are rumors that Epson is about to introduce some new models, so prices may start falling.

LR or PS, you've got all the software you'll ever need.
pasi_h_gg
How about one or the better canon multis, MP990 or the like ?
jim_jones3
Much depends on what you want in prints. For nothing larger than 8.5x11 inches, some of the inexpensive printers produce attractive prints. An important consideration for many of us is print longivity. A few small printers are poor in this respect, others are quite good. You can find information on this at http://www.wilhelm-research.com/.
