ShunCheung
Nikon only has one version of the 400mm/f2.8 AF-S that has VR. Prior to that, there were two AF-S versions without VR. The VR vesion was introduced on 23rd August, 2007 along with the D3 and D300.
nishnishant
Interestingly I googled for sample images and found that a news website actually includes the ISO speed, aperture and shutter speed info along with camera and lens in the article body:

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/bestseatinthehouse/2008/11/22/girls_soccer_alive_and_kicking.html
walterh
Nish yes worth a look. At least one really excellent action shot there. All images show the good IQ of that lens.
Rick Waller
This lens is one of the sharpest lenses made by Nikon. I borrowed one of the earliest copies, courtesy of NPS and bought it immediately. Simply stunning image quality and AF is so fast, you won't believe it. Incidentally, it pairs nicely with the 1.4 TC. Not as perfect, but certainly useable.

Below is shot (without a TC) at 2.8. darryl-taylor
I feel slightly cheated that a lens discussion has taken place without the B word

senthil1
I've heard that 400mm 2.8 is the sharpest tele frm Nikon. I've the 600mm VR, which is razor sharp. Can only imagine how 400mm wud be!!! Sometimes I think of getting 400mm and selling 200-400mm.
wilsontsoi
Nish, good link to Rodney's blog even though he's no longer with the papers and went solo and as Seahawks/Sounders FC photog. FWIW here are samples from 400 AFS non-VR, girls soccer as well and have to agree that they can be surprisingly physical despite having seen shot mens soccer and football.
