The new 24-120 f4

<p>Since there are now sample images about taken with this lens I wonder if any of you have any comments.<br>

It looked a little soft at 24<br>

I have ordered one - the day it was announced and expect it anyday now.</p>

<p>You're probably going to see lots of distortion like with Nikon's previous 24-120 lenses. I'm no engineer, but I don't see any real way around this with such a wide zoom range (especially in a smallish lens).</p>

<p>I guess like most lenses, a little post processing may be needed. I have the original 24-120mm and although many claim it is a crappy lens, I find that after post processing, images from it are just as good as any other lens I have. </p>

<p>Ultimately, it is a little hard to compare when you don't have side-by-side images to compare to and don't have control over picture controls or PP.</p>

<p>Perhaps you can do some test shots and share your results.</p>

<p>Like Elliot, I had the original 24-120 and found no issues with it. Now if its the same as the newer version optically, I don't know. However, when it was stolen recently, instead of buying another 24-120, I took note of all the negative comments here, and bought instead the 24-85mm f/2.8, which was roughly the same price.</p>

If mine arrives in the next few days I will quite gladly run some tests but I am far from being a good photographer!</p>

<p>at twice the price of the "old" G, variable aperture version, this lens ought to be good. my copy of the old one was, to my eye, quite soft. even when i wasn't even looking very hard, they still looked soft.<br>

this lens, from the samples at least, is a whole different story. the images looked very good over all. the only thing that surprised me a bit was some color fringing, which i would have expected to be taken care of in-camera, or at least in post. what's up with that?</p>
