harry_zet
dear all
the flash on my daughters d40 stopped working - it retracts when needed but does not fire. does anyone know what the culprit could be? i assume the flash-tube is broken. do you have a repair manual and a source where to get a spare part? e*bay is full of spares for the d40, but alas, no flash. any help appreciated
elliot1
Get it professionally serviced or invest in an SB-400 (probably a better choice).

If you really want to give the repair a try yourself, contact Nikon's service department for the cost of the bulb.
acbeddoe
While I'm a do-it-yourselfer, this one sounds like a good candidate for a repair shop. There's an excellent Nikon-authorized one here in Massachusetts.
harry_zet
dear all, alas (or thanks god) i live in austria. and i really would like to repair it myself, as the cost of professional repair is probably more than a new used d40 and i would like to save some money here.
acbeddoe
In that case, here's a link to the repair manual:
http://online.manualspace.com/digital-camera-free-ebooks/nikon-camera-service-manual/5224/nikon-d40-digital-slr-camera-repair-manual-322.html

daverhaas
one word of caution - flashes are generally high voltage items... even though they run on very little power (relatively speaking) - make sure you follow the instructions on making sure that it is completely discharged before touching anything remotely electrical.

Dave
elliot1
In addition to the cautions previously listed, you run the risk of breaking your camera further if you don't do the repair correctly. Not sure how much a bulb is but a SB-400 is inexpensive and much more useful than the on-board flash.
User_3607948
I googled "flash repair nikon d40" remembering a posting from last year. A youtube instruction for a fix turned out very informative. If you don't want to attempt the repair yourself, at least you have some idea of the level of complexity and, subsequently, some means to determine if a repair quote is within reason.
Joe
harry_zet
dear all, thanks for your support. after checking the service manual i gave up and ordered a metz 28 flash - it is here now and works better than the built-in flash. case closed :-)
