dean_cookson
Are the black plastic bags that the 4x5 film is in, inside the box lightproof? If I remove one, still sealed, from the box, will I fog the film inside? Thanks, Dean
kcrisp
Dean: It would take an experiment to be sure, but my guess is that in normal darkroom "lights on" level light you could get away with this if the black plastic bag is still sealed. I think prolonged exposure even in reduced light will get through the plastic and even a short exposure in bright light would do it. If you invest any time and care about your photos, then take the most exposed sheet off the outside (or both outside sheets) and develop it/them and see if it is fogged. light-zone
Dean, to get the definitive answer to your question, try asking it at: http://www.ilford.com/cgi/Ilfopro/ilfopro.pl An Ilford Teckie will answer your question.
mark_sampson
Don't count on it. I've fogged film that way (it wasn't HP5).
jonathan_bundick
This is by no means a definative answer, but my first 4x5 shots were transported to the lab in a black plastic envelope that came from a 4x5 box of film. I doubled the end over and it did not fog, but I would perfer to take my film to the lab in the three section box. Let us know if you get an answer from Ilford. richard_ilomaki
Den: Try the plastic bags that Ilford and other enlarging paper come in. Very heavy and solid. A bag in a bag, properly sealed with tape can withstand bright sublight. Cheers
