brittany_mccoy
Great advice everyone!

& Left thank you for breakign the auto-focus down for me my brand. I am learning so much from you all! I am have decided on two and need to pick one from there...
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM (&& will the Nikon AF on my d5000? from Left's response above looks like the Sigme will but not sure on the Nikon).
wmervine
That Nikon won't. You will need the F/1.4 AF-S. About the same price as the Sigma, and a really good lens.
brittany_mccoy
looks like this version of the Nikon will...thoughts?

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-1-4G-Focus-Nikkor/dp/B0036CW24G/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1279279426&sr=1-4

...So would you go with the Nikon or Sigma?
wmervine
I own the Nikon, and while the reviews say the Sigma is also very good, the impression I got was the Nikon was slightly better. It is a stunning lens on my D5000.

wmervine
Some reviews if this will help:
Nikon:
http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/413-nikkor_50_14g?start=2
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_50_1p4g_n15/page5.asp
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1231/cat/12
Sigma:
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/521-sigma50f1450d?start=1
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_50_1p4_c16/page6.asp
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1202/cat/30

I don't know about your side, but by me the Nikon is cheaper, smaller and lighter, and it's Nikon. And for most of us, you are not really going to see much difference in the quality from what I can see.
My 2 cents worth.

left_ayyones
Good deal! I think you'll enjoy the low-light, flashless shooting opportunities that you can get with f/1.4.

In the meantime, check out this guide if you haven't read it, as well as the comments: http://www.photo.net/learn/portraits/
