I took this last Sunday, mostly just to see how well the DA 15 and the K-7 handled strong backlight. It's one of the front rotor blades from a USMC CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter, with the mid-day sun directly behind it. More specifically though, this is the CH-46 that Capt. Gerry Berry flew on 30 April 1975 to evacuate the American ambassador from Saigon. It's on display, along with many other USMC aircraft, at the Flying Leatherneck Museum in San Diego. I have to say, I think that the K-7/DA 15 handled this pretty well. Shot as jpeg, straight out of camera, K7, f/8, 1/400, ISO 100.

I can see my fave list is going to be a long one this week.

Here's my three and an extra: I took a class in daylight studio lighting last week where we used three different types of studios with window light (and a skylight) as well as two rooftops. First two are of the models on the rooftop.

Outstanding this week is (well, from my rather limited point of view, that is) :
Haig’s first ofcourse, and the second because of its classy colour-work
Dave’s series on a stick
Matt’s sunset and
Howard’s exotic portrait
I'm still working (hard) on renovating our new home, so photography is very much a secondary thing.
Still, my camara is always nearby.

from the 'brave new world'-series
Lens Focal Length: 18,00 mm
Shutter Speed: 33/50000 sec
F-Number: F9,5
ISO: 200
.

a picture of a rose, really....
Lens Focal Length: 23,00 mm
Shutter Speed: 1/180 sec
F-Number: F16,0
ISO: 800
.

work out on a ladder
this is an failed exercise on pp
Lens Focal Length: 55,00 mm ()
Shutter Speed: 1111/50000 sec
F-Number: F16,0
ISO: 800

From last weekends paddle, the rebuilt upper dam on the Bog River that creates Lows Lake/Bog River Flow. The original was built in the late 1800s by A.A. Low. Although this is now a designated wilderness, if the dam is left to fail the 17 mile motorless Bog River Flow would drain and return to a largely unnavigable stream. Rebuilding dammed impoundments is a case by case basis in state Forest Preserve wilderness areas.

Here's what caught my eye:
Haig: nice framing and DOF for #3
Dave S: nice perspective on the lighthouse
Robert C: lovely and candid
Andrew: the waxwings at just the right moment, nice
Dave H: great poses for the birds
Matt: the chair makes an interesting abstract
Steve R: mother nature cooperated to get such colors
Javier: OK, I got it when I finally looked at her camera strap
Michael E: like the digitalis, why chose B+W?
Howard: lovely ladies beautifully done; the dramatic Empire State Building is excellent
Dorus: who but you would think to photograph a ladder rung, not sure what the failure is

My faves, so far:
Haig- Great composition, but me, I think I would have liked color better |-) .#2 Interesting effect - Sepia - but not.
Chune - #2 caught a nice moment
Robert - #s 1 &2 Really special
Andrew - #1 Really good capture both action and light; #2 is a LOL!
Bruce - It's great when they pose- nice bokeh
Matt - #1 I love it
Steve - Great sky exposure
Javier - #1 - I know you said it's gritty but she's phoning home for money to buy a camera (from the store nearby). Otherwise, a poignant capture.
#3 - It says Pentax over her .... ummm sweater! By the way, when I was at Adorama last week for the class, one of the store staff members asked the class, as we were going by, what cameras we were using = Nikon, Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Canon etc until they got to me. When I said Pentax, a great cheer from the staff went up. I never found out why, but was certainly welcome.
ME - #1 - The colors
John - #1 - draws you in.
Dorus - #3 Failed? Best shot of the 3!
Justin - #1 You made what could have been a boring shot into one worthy of a poster.
#2 He's making me nervous - pull him back!
Dorus, Bruce - Thanks much.

Some that I keep coming to are
Haig's second one,
Robert's shots of the kids
Mat's first one - love the sun in particular
Michael's Digitalis
Also enjoying the contributions of Dorus - I would have to agree with others on the last one. I like it.
Javier - keeping it real
Justin's - you could do a visual story of Colvin's adventures.
I have one to add - my own photo therapy for the week, and much needed quiet space in a chaotic household. Took a few of the flowers in the front yard, this for me was the pick in the few that I grabbed.

00WoeR-257659584.jpg.0c0157021f640d1b16d1ffef4b1b737e.jpg

Haig - love that first one. That cat tails give it so much depth.
Dave - I like the lighthouse. The color of the ocean is so deep.
Robert - nice kid shots!
Dave - I like that "Feed me!" one. Classic interaction.
Javier - the girl and the phone is just a great picture. Nice!
John - your first is very appealing. I love how the leaves or petals are all intertwined and the color is so rich.
Frank - point it right at the sun! I probably do too much but there's a novelty to it.
Howard - I really like those highlights on the Empire State Building.
Justin - Interesting and nicely presented. The dog is looking good too!
Dorus - I really like your ladder "failure". And the first one!

Comments and feedback from this week:

Haig, the Richmond shot is outstanding. B&W is a smart choice for bringing out the textures and the haze tones.

Bob C., each of those kid pix gently says "summer" in a very colorful way. Very sweet.

Andrew D., cedar waxwings have visited our place this past week too. That first one is a keeper.

Bruce M, the bridge shot is irresistible! I'm morbidly curious about those "recent incidents."

Matt B, I kinda like that chair back, especially with the shadow contrast. Reminds me of the spires of a Russian Orthodox church in Seattle by REI.

Javier, please continue discovering Pentax shooters like her. . .even the dinosaur is interested.

Howard, that second, "Dramatic" is nicely executed. I like the background break that aligns with her face. Muted colors too.

Haig, I love the second image a whole bunch. You did a fantastic job with the color and composition is very good. I only wish that the roof top on the right was not there, but hey...What is a man to do...Well done!

Robert, Love the juxtaposed wax birds...Nice capture!

Chune...Nice to see ya posting again and that house image is intense...Well done!

Dave, That light house image is really nice. I am also very happy to see it is not a traditional light house image. This is a great perspective....

Robert C...That number 2 image is a wall hanger...I would bet the parents would love to have that!

Andrew D. Love the cedar wax wings. What a cute capture!

Bruce M. That dragon Fly is a fantastic capture...Try bumping the Saturation a tick and perhaps a .5 at 100% USM and you will be Golden...

Dave, You are officially the bird man! That first in particular is fantastic...Tack sharp!

Yury, What sweet bokeh...Nice capture and way to fill the view finder.

Matt B...Week after week you keep impressing me...These three are all so different and all so good which shows your versatility...Keep up the good work..

Trent...Love the detail and the color...Sweet!

Favorites of the week:

Haig's first shot. Generally I would consider it a little low contrast for my taste, but I really like it.

Bruce's wax wing.

Matt's first shot with the sunburst and nice lighting on the foreground rocks. I really gotta add that 15mm eventually.

Steve's sunset, although I would like it better if the flag was better exposed or eliminated!

Javier's little girl at the phone.

ME's "Suggestive", yes it is!

Frank's helicopter rotor actually interest me for a "test shot". Might have been even better with a different crop.

Howard's ESB is lit just about postcard perfect, and the modeling session looked good too.

Dorus's stuff is as usual well done and a great example of great post processing. Oddly, I kinda like the failed ladder the best!

Picking favorites is always tough for me.. so I'll try and leave a comment or two about most of the photos as I scroll down :-) And a big thank you by the way for everyone who stopped to make comments on the way.. it does turn into a daunting task! lol.
And Justin thanks for the 'suggestion' about having my first shot more contrasty.. I played with it some more and it sure adds a bit more impact.
Robert B : I like the shot, except it looks a bit too 'smooth' if you know what I mean (loss of detail).
Chune : I think I would have liked your first shot better if you had taken it from further left of where you were standing.. and cut out more of the sun and bright sky. Your second shot is well done.
Dave Sh : Good shot of the lighthouse.. Pretty view! And I like the colorful kids with their knitting needles.
Robert C : I really really like your first 2 shots, there is something about kids expressions that is always refreshing and natural. And the eyes of the little cutie in the first shot are really pretty.
Andrew D : #1 - I am envious! Nice capture!
Bruce M : Your first shot needs a bit more contrast.. looks a bit washed out to my eyes. Your second shot with that lens is great.. a bit overexposed I think.
Dave H : Your 'on a stick' series is pretty good.. They are all very good captures, but I kind of like your flycatcher the best.
Yury : Not a bad catch :-)
Matt B : That first shot is really nice.. I have to stop looking at it before more LBA kicks in! Your second shot is too scattered, with no primary subject methinks. I like your third one.. try it in BW?
Trent W : Not bad :-).. but I liked a few others in that set more.
Steve R : I agree with Justin about the flag.. Pretty capture though.
Javier : That first shot with the little girl and the phone is awesome! I like the pentaxian as well.. but maybe I am not being as objective there.. lol
Michael E : Nice composition and DOF on your first one.. Digitalis in BW methinks looks perfect.. And the title of your third one says it all :-)
John B : The sedum looks great.. love the colors in that shot. I might have tried to selectively darken the rose just a bit.. looks a bit bright to me.
Tony : Nice shot.. try cloning out the spot or whatever it is on the right side.
Frank : You and Matt are not helping any!!
Howard: I really liked exotic!! My first impression of dramatic was that it needed a boost in contrast.. maybe it's the title that makes me think of that.. not sure. And I also like your NYC sunset.
Dorus : As usual you do present things in novel ways.. I have to admit that this weeks offerings are not on a par with previous postings..That's probably because I have seen some of your work that just blows me away.. and that ladder even though you deem it a failure is still pretty decent :-)
Justin : Always quality shots.. very well done on the first.. And does Colvin ever look bad in a photo? He looks confident :-)
Denise : Love the colors in your shot.. the only thing I find distrating is the other purple flower 'melding' with your main subject. Sometimes it's tough to really pay attention to the background..
Steve B : A bit more contrast would be good to get the tree trunk darker.. and the sky not so bright.
Thank you all for sharing .. and for those who have not posted, please feel free to do so anytime till next Sunday :-)
