tom_yin
I will be in Vermont in about 10 days and hope to spend a few days taking in the fall colors. Can anyone suggest prime car routes or hikes to out of the way spots in southern VT that are likely to be good photo ops? Is the Mt Equinox Skyline Drive worth the trip? How about some quaint and quiet towns??
Monophoto
Rt 100 is reported to offer the most scenic options of any of the main roads in Vermont.
Quaint/quiet towns: there are lots of them. Dorset and Pawlet in the western part of the state are very nice; Richmond in central Vermont. Middlebury is a bit larger but still a pretty small (college) town. Manchester Village (NOT Manchester Center - that's all shopping) is a traditional quaint little town.
The Mt Equinox drive is OK if you are on it at the peak of the color season. Otherwise, it's just an expensive drive. There are some free back roads in the Manchester area that are just as pretty during leaf-peeping season.
deirdre_saoirse_moen
http://www.foliage-vermont.com/
I always enjoyed the road between Randolph and Rochester. The latter's on Route 100. Randolph's in the exact center of the state.
