mdma
I recently purchased a yellow filter for my bw film photography, specifically a vintage toshiba one [for its retro charm ;)]
However, it is not perfectly clear and transparent; there are what appears to be grain or speckles as part of the glass (its not just dirt/dust), spread fairly consistently over the whole filter.
Will this affect the image quality in any discernible way? - ie. did I buy a dud?
I've attached a photo to better illustrate the issue.

lachaine
I would say that filter has outlived its usefulness.

JDMvW
Look at it this way, you have got a yellow diffusion filter for no extra cost. You don't even need to buy a jar of petroleum jelly.
mdma
I guess every cloud has a silver lining. Or at least a grainy one.
lachaine
I've used filters like that for toy camera photography on old vintage cameras, seriously. Picture perfect isn't exactly the goal with those, though. What you see as speckles is probably some layer separation.
sumo_kun
Are you sure its not dirt? It might be dried on oil. Get some alcohol and try wiping it. I've got many old Toshiba, Minolta Pentax etc filters and they are all clear.
mdma
Well when I feel it, only one side feels rough - the outer one. Unfortunately I have no rubbing alcohol at the moment so i tried a little 45% bourbon, to no avail however. Although it now smells amazing.
Ive taken a shot with it (the filter, not the bourbon) and ill put it up as soon as i get it processed.
Regardless of how it comes out, Ive got my sights on a beautiful silver Nikon Y48, which hopefully shouldn't have the same issue...
