Places in January

This is a very open ended question. I'm starting a new job in jan 2011 and have 2 weeks inbetween jobs. i'm looking for recommendations for places to travel and do some photography. I had been planning on doing cambodia and thailand but am worried about the political unrest. I shoot everything but really like landscapes and color. Most recently I was in Antelope Canyon which was fantastic and highly recommended. I've been to places like thailand, india, argentina and switzerland. I liked the subject matter in india the most because of the unusual architecture, colorful clothes and scenery but want to go somewhere different. Doesn't have to be international (I live in the US). Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

how about new zealand? beautiful landscapes there. Africa - Morocco is very colorful - great markets, people, scenary. Kenya/Tanzania - safari. What about Vietnam, instead of Thailand. Maybe Burma? Indonesia, Malaysia....just throwing out some places I've been and places I'd like to get to someday!

January in Egypt is a lovely time. Not too hot and not cold either. However, the catch is that everything is so crowded now that the independent-style travel that I did in 1973 (not a crowded time for other reasons too), is not really easy now. I went more recently in 2007 with one of the Popular Photography Photo Trek tours (but those are in March), and the travel/police people cleared even the nearly gridlocked roads for our group.
Check with Misr Travel for a good experience, they run less photographically-oriented tours and may have individually escorted tours for a price.

Australian summer? Peru? Maya Ruins (closer to New Orleans in some cases than to Mexico City)?

I've enjoyed Mexico in winter espeicially Yucatan /Campeche and the silver/colonial cites north of Mexico City such as San Miguel, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Morelia and so on. In two weeks you could get a taste of both. They share some interesting history, indigenous and colonial, some beautifully coloured architecture.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking into Morroco and Egypt as my wife and I have never been there and it may be similar to India in terms of amazing subject material. Regarding Burma, doesn't the US state department not even recognize it as a legitimate government or something along those lines? It's unfortunate as I've seen amazing photos from there. Maybe that's changed.

How about China... I traveled there for 2-weeks in April of this year and it was fabulous and quite picturesque. However, I would stay away from Northern China because it can get pretty frigid at that time of year...
Another interesting place to travel would be Southern Vietnam (the term South Vietnam is now politically incorrect). The weather there is the best in December and it is picturesque and fairly inexpensive.
I like to do trips on my own but, don't mind going on mini-tours while I am visiting a country.
This Song Xanh boat tour looks really interesting: http://www.vietnamtripadvisor.com/vietnamtour/MekongDeltaTravel/songxanhcruise3days/

Travel to and around Cambodia even through Thailand is no longer a safety issue. There may be political problems in Thailand but its not going to affect any tourist In Cambodia,Vietnam or Laos which are relatively stable. The Civil war in Cambodia ended over 10 years ago and the country is fast becoming the palce to be in SE Asia.
Cambodia is a photographic paradise with the incredible monuments of Angkor. The big draw for me is the fabulous people photography opportunities and the amazing sights to be seen on Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake. The Bird sanctuary at Prek Toal is one of the wonders of Asia. The opportunities to travel to a fabulous jungle temples, ancient cites and picturesque villages are almost endless.
Ive been living out here for much of the last decade and have never tired of the photo opportunities here.
People who come here usually wish they had allowed more time
