tarek_wazzan
hello..
i am looking for a (normal) prime lens for my eos 450d.. it should have very good optical quality, be relatively fast ( at least f/2) have good autofocus, ideally be not too expensive and not too heavy.. i am considering the ef 35 f1.4 ( but bit too expensive and heavy) and nikkor af-s dx 35 f1.8 g via adaptor ( i am not sure if that is possible.. is it?).. i appreciate your feedback..
thank you

tarek
daniel flather
I have the Canon 35/1.4—it's a great lens—I shoot it wide open and the images look wonderful.
tdigi
Canon 28 1.8, Canon 35 2.0 and Sigma 30 1.4 are the 3 most popular.
Any of these 3 should work well depending on what you value.

The 28 has USM is a bit more expensive and a bit wider. Some say its not very sharp but I have been happy with it.

The Sigma 30 will not work on full frame, I never used this lens but I hear its very good

The Canon 35 2.0 does not have real USM but its smaller and cheaper and produces good results.

ed_v.
I have the 35/2 and like it a lot. It meets 4 of your 5 criteria (autofocus speed/noise is not it's strong suit, but it has bee accurate for me). It's impossibly small and IQ is good even at f/2. nathan_meador
I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and love to use it for group or full length portraits and indoor basketball. It doesn't get the greatest reviews, but I'm very happy with it....maybe I got a real good copy.
bueh
Sounds like you want the SigMa 30mm. The Canon 35mm (and 24mm) f/1.4L lenses are monsters, probably heavier than your camera and just too expensive for their performance on entry-level crop-factor dSLRs.

nikkor af-s dx 35 f1.8 g via adaptor ( i am not sure if that is possible.. is it?).

It is not. "G" lens = no aperture ring. And no autofocus, of course.

jack_nordine
The previously mentioned 35mm 2.0 is an outstanding bargain. Fast, sharp, small, inexpensive, and a great "normal" focal length on a crop.
rwyphotography
I have the Sigma 30 f1.4 and love the image quality. Initially when I was reading the reviews, I read a lot about focusing issues with this lens. I did not have the problems and enjoy the light weight yet solid construction and the nice bokeh.
