fred_turko1
I have three tokina lenses: 28-70 f2.8 pro, 80-200 2.8 pro, and the 20-35 atx. I feel like an idiot, but i just can't seems to figure out how to read the depth of field scale. There doesn;t seem to be any reference to f stop on the distance number, nor any way to measure the range.
todd peach seattle, washi
You're not an idiot, there is no DOF scale on those lenses (at least not on http://www.thkphoto.com/ ). They do have index marks for IR focusing, and these look suspiciously like DOF marks, but they aren't. You'll want to hit one of the many 'DOF calculator' sites on the web and gin yourself up some wallet cards for these.
michael_hohner
DOF varies with focal length, so it wouldn't make much sense to put a DOF index on a zoom anyway.
doc411m
Fred - Todd's right. No more DOF scales. You'll need to run a 'Depth of Field' search with Google, and find a good explanation of circle of confusion, and a calculator to make up a field card. Then get a long tape measure (or a rangefinder), and get out and make yourself familiar enough with distance to be able to give a close guess when you need to. Some one-touch zooms (i.e. Tokina 80-200) had DOF scales, and several lenses still have a rudimentary rangefinder with their focus rings.
