brendan_cathcart
hello i just recently aquired a very monstrous black calumet c-1 and would like my fellow c-1 and 8x10 photographers to give me advise on what equipment you use to make your shooting experience less grueling. like what backpacks would fit a camera of this size. things like that. thanks.
vick_vickery
A small truck would be nice! :-) That camera is pretty heavy and when you add a suitable tripod and the necessary accessories to the package, its probably one that I would really use primarily out of and near to the vehichle when in the field. Its a great studio camera, but a bit of a load in the field. If I absolutely had to carry it in the field, I would opt for a cart of some type, either a converted two-wheeled golf/luggage cart or a three-wheeled baby-jogger type cart. 'Course I'm 62 years old...you young whippersnappers might not mind hauling all that around!
john_galuszka
RE: Vick's reply

A small four-wheel-drive would be useful in many circumstances. I use a Geo Tracker for big cameras.

robert_meyer3
I have a Calumet C-1 that I use for landscape photography some. I don't use a backpack, but rather a fabric suitcase. It's one of those with wheels and a retractible handle. I put filmholders in a large outside pocket on the front, and roll up the darkcloth and put it along the camera on the top inside. I have several different tripods, but something like a Sandford & Davis is small enough to fasten with a bungee cord to the top of the suitcase to the extended handle. I have several rigs like this in different sizes for view cameras from 4x5 up to 11x14.
hailu_shack1

Congrats, Brendan, on getting a Black Beast. I just recently got a magnesium Green Monster. Toting one of these really forces the grey cells to work, as you have no doubt seen that very, very few are sold with the original Calumet case. Back in 1965 that case was aluminum, so I don't know why they don't circulate more. Anyhow, I realized that my baby just might fit into my LowePro Photo Trekker AW II backpack. It is kind of big but it holds a lot. I've got a Calumet SC 4x5 kit (regular and short rails) that I can disassemble and put in. And.....it also swallows the C-1, very snugly. No room for anything else inside. The backpack came with an accessory external pack that I could use for a reduction back and/or film holders and a lens.
hailu_shack1
In the next month or so I will try to figure out plans for a simple storage and 'transport in the car' case. I want to build one that is lighter and an ATA flight case - much lighter. However, I would like to build an ATA-type case, eventually. That would be the easiest way to ship it via air or ground services. And for those time when you want a substitute for a sandbag to brace your tripod, or sit on while you calculate bellows extension and filter factors. I hope this link for an image of the backpack works.

hailu_shack1
Here's a photo of the LowePro Photo Trekker AW II that I mentioned above. I don't think they are making the same model; but I would imagine that it has been replaced by something very similar. Good luck, hope this helps.

don_bryant2
A Lowe Pro Super Trekker AW works. I used that pack for years to carry mine.
