nelson_galima
Has anyone been successful connecting a Coolscan LS4000 (6 pin) to notebook computer (i.Link) via a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable? My notebook doesn't seem to recognize the scanner.
dpbours
Technically it should be possible, since data pairs in the cable are not cut. The 6 to 4 pin firewire only skips the power and not the data part. Have a look here: http://pinouts.ru/Slots/ieee1394_pinout.shtml
Since the scanner is getting its own power, this should not be a problem.

dpbours
Reading further on the internet, it has more to do with the specific Firewire chipset your laptop is having. The Nikon scanners can be quite picky about that. There are recommended Cardbus adapters with Firewire:
http://www.photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/006n9R
dpbours
And something else on the internet - then you know this cardbus card works:
"I have been using an LS-4000 with a Dell 4-pin connector, a
StarTech.com 2-port IEEE-1394 Firewire Cardbus, and a LaCie 3-port
Firewire 800/400 card (actually Texas Instruments firmware) with no
problems. My software is both VueScan and Nikon Scan (the latest
version)."
Ed_Ingold
You have to go through the Nikonscan installation procedure in order to install the drivers and get the scanner properly registered (as in the Windows registry). 6-4 Firewire cables should present no problem.
Peter_in_PA
I've run across a number of firewire devices in the audio world that will NOT work properly with the chipsets in most or all 4-pin laptop connections, so be careful, it might not work.
