? About My 35mm Summaron 3.5

I've just purchased a 35mm Summaron 3.5 (1272627) for my M2/M7; it is

not the one with the bug eyes. I now find it doesn't correctly bring

up the 35mm frames in the viewfinder. Is this normal for this lens?

Is there a fix or should I return it to the dealer? Thank Tom

The early Summarons didn't bring up the 35mm frame line. It can be modified by adding a bit of metal to the bayonet lug. Might be cheaper to get a slightly later model than have this one updated, but ask your dealer. When your lens was made the M2 wasn't yet produced, and it would have made little sense for it to key in the 135mm frame. As things turned out, the 35 and 135 frames use the same position!

Wait a minute... stop the presses.

The 35 frame line will come up all by itself with no lens attached, and thus, lenses bringing up the 35/135 frame combination would have the shortest "lug" on the lensmount.

The 50/75 has the next longest lug.. and the 28/90 has the lonest of all.

Therefore, no metal needs to be added, but even more curiously.... what frames does it bring up now? I cannot imagine that it would bring up anything but the 35/135. 35's with the eyes had 50mm mounts after the M2 came out... so its possible that there was some mount hankypanky in the lens' past. But if the 35 frame once worked, it should continue to work, unless the lens is being rotated past its click stop (most 35's can be over rotated to bring up the 50/75 frames, and 50's can be over rotated to bring up the 28/90 frames)

I'd like to hear whats going on with this....

Perfectly normal as the lens was intended for the M3 which had 135mm as

the neutral frame. Mask off the lens and file the bayonet ear that moves the

frameline mechanism. It is the one next to the frameline selector lever when

the lens is mounted.

If you feel nervous doing it yourself, it is an easy and quick modification for

any camera repair person to do.
