john_sarsgard1
Can the LCD monitor screen on the 5d be disabled? Would be handy for street and/or night photography, and in general working inconspicuously.
JDMvW
Manual p. 104
Select
Review time >off
then your camera will only display the image when you tell it to by pushing the arrow button to the left of the LCD. I have mine set this way all the time. That way, I can choose if I want to see a view or not. This is especially handy at night, as you say, so's you don't end up as the "phantom photographer" glowing all over the place. :)
So far as I know, something very like this works on all EOS dSLRs. I also have got "Hoodman" style folding covers for the LCD on all of my cameras. This is not as convenient on the XTi, where controls are displayed, but works very well with the cameras with top displays.
john_sarsgard1
Many thanks. I knew it had to be there somewhere. Just wasn't looking for the right words! I think this will be my normal mode of shooting.

mike_stemberg
No 'LCD glow' is a fine way to avoid attention in dark theatres and concerts too.
