Caught four this week with three surprises (to me). I was in Manhattan, waiting outside the barbershop until the barber was ready for me. It was a grey day, but I didn't realize how grey. My ISO was set at 400 thinking that would give me a fast enough shutter speed. As will see, in at least one, it wasn't fast enough.

In this first one, she seemed to capture the mood of the day. My surprise was a green cast that I corrected for. Another surprise was the shutter speed. At ISO 400, it seemed very slow at 1/15.

00VBat-198267584.jpg.daa8c6d0d1f4d1706c565446620400c3.jpg

I've been working on some new portrait techniques this week. I setup my studio lights a couple of weeks ago at school to take faculty shots. This image was a going away gift for the school's recruiter. I guess we can just call it the painterly effect. Both I and the subject were happy with it. I'm ordering a 16x20 canvas print; thinking the added texture of the canvas will set off the effects. Still playing with styles and next step is getting the process refined so it's doesn't take so darn long. This one was hours and hours of experimentation. I completley lost track of time working on it and was up until like 3am... That has not happend in YEARS!

00VBdM-198287584.jpg.a8b8f4b2600322007885e72c4380ffc3.jpg

Many fine shots this week!.
Particularly enjoyed in no order.
Hin's film shots, keep up the nice work.
Michael E. soccer celebration.
Robert C. landscapes
Beerbrain rural shots
@Doug Robinson, the bridge has no correction and the 12mm setting is practically distortion free. Also I was probably about 4-5 feet from the bridge support in the left side of the shot.

My main objective in Photography over the last 30 years has been to document the rural atmosphere and buildings that have been disappearing as our city expands and engulfs them. All this summer I struggled with a derelict barn site near where I live, but was not successful. The “Oasis”was taken in September. I went back 2 days later, to try and do a better job and it was gone. Gone, like bulldozed, flattened, disappeared. Look forward to streets, sidewalks, garages, roofs, chimneys.

Here are two posts of the site (the first is simply very amateurish playing with PS). These two, like the others, are quite ordinary. However, now that the site has gone forever, I am glad that I have them.

Some good stuff guys.

I like the B/W shots Hin. lots of mood there.
Pretty cool "Boathouse Row" Robert. Wonder how often they get flooded?
I like #2 as well Howard. Gives a real feeling of the movement going on in the street.

I'll add one from a recent "road Trip" through California. Taken along the edge of the Mojave Desert on the way to Yosamite.

Pentax K10D, PENTAX-DA 12mm-24mm F4 ED AL [iF] Lens. Converted to "quasi-infared" in ACDSee Pro 2.5.

00VBgN-198317784.thumb.jpg.fa5c74aca63b891bf14747edc7bc5e90.jpg

Some friends and I drove out to the east part of San Diego County (California) on Saturday to do a bit of exploring. Our first stop was the Motor Transport Museum in Campo. Lots of old trucks and machinery.

We ended up the day with a drive through the local mountains on some paved and unpaved roads.

When I was growing up my father would occasionally borrow a friends plane and I would get to go along to wherever the destination happened to be. If we were going past the Christmas Valley area in Oregon we would be sure to look over a huge, very remote, ridge where two different airplanes from different eras crashed within 1/2 a mile of each other. There was an A-6 that went down on a night, low-level, training mission in 1973 and then a P-38 that must be a WW-2 relic.

I have always had it in the back of my mind that I would like to visit the site on the ground and see what was there. So this last week I drove out and camped out in the shell on the back of the pickup to be up and going at first light.

I woke up to dense fog and 12 degree weather. Half the way up the ridge the fog let up and would come and go with the slight wind. The sagebrush was covered in frost and gave a nice look to everything. On the way up I had seen fresh (wild) horse tracks and started to hear noises up above me. I started moving like I was hunting and put the 500mm Tamron on.

Sure enough, after 100 yards or so the fog lifted and I had horses all around me. I was winded and excited so many of the shots did not turn out well, but I got a few good ones.

00VBoQ-198397684.jpg.fd4b04394182d2b64743bdaca7122745.jpg

Here is the tail of the A-6. There is a plaque the BLM put up to memorialize the two aviators that had a lot of the information about the accident. We had always thought it was an F-102 when looking from the air (there wasn't a lot to go on). The wreckage goes on for at least 1/2 a mile and the tail is the biggest piece.

I wondered around and never did find the P-38 remains. It is a lot easier to see from the air. I guess that is reserved for another trip.

00VBoY-198397784.jpg.7c7a0ca9a6f7a5866145bbd1136fa96b.jpg

Lots of good stuff here.
John: Your beautiful Snowy Rose is perfect. It tells the story of two seasons.
Maria: The hand-holding is great natural image.
John B: Your bridges have beautiful lines.
Robert: First Snow is pure art. It would hang on my wall.
Hin: You are thinking too much. The B&W's are fine. Now, settle down, put the past behind you, and do youir digital stuff. We all have to do it eventually :).
Nick: Sucker is a winner.
Howard: #3 is dramatic. A striking effect obtained so simply.
Scott: A perfect example of what B&W is all about.
Javier: Love #3 & #4 with the faces telling part of the story.
Frank: Great images plucked from nowhere.
Dave: Improved? The basketball action shot is perfect. The guys at SI couldn't match this!
