bob_sunley
With or without a lens? Depending on what event, you just might want/need a $6k lens clipped onto the front of it. :)
Matt Laur
Just the camera body, or camera and lenses? Night shooting, or daylight? Strobes/flash, or only available light? Shooting from a distance, or working up close?
steven_f1
There are two answers to your question, Any DSLR or Nn DSLR. It all depends on exactly what you want to do and your skill with a camera. Without more information it would be very difficult to answer your question.
stwrtertbsratbs5
A high-end body with an excellent AF system. That would be anything from a D300 up on the Nikon side. Canon and other brands have excellent AF, too, but I know Nikon best.
wgpinc
The two 'best' cameras are in the $5k region; Nikon D3 and Canon 1D III with whatever zoom lens frames the distance you are from the skiers. On the lower end there are two excellent choices in DX crop frame cameras; The Nikon D300 or D300s and the new Canon 7D both have the excellent auto focus and relatively high frame rates that would make them perform for this sport, again with the appropriate zoom range that would frame the subjects at the distance you will be from the action. In either case you may be looking at either a 70-299mm 2.8 lens or even a 100-400mm lens. Good luck!
bill_tuthill
From a distance, certainly a DSLR. If you want to carry it in your pocket, I would go with the Fuji F200EXR (in DR 400% or 800% mode) for its wide dynamic range. US$250. Sun on snow is very bright, and the EXR sensor has industry-leading highlight detail.
anthony_zipple
Nothing under $2000 would be great. You need an SLR and serious glass. The cost will depend on how close you can get. I would see a fact focusing SLR, something like a Canon 7D and a fast medium telephoto lens, maybe a 70-200 f/2.8, as the starting point. That will cost you about $3500. You could substitute a longer lens if you are farther away, add a 24-70 if you can get close in.
eric_arnold
i'd get either a canon 7d or a nikon d300, simply because you need good AF and a high frame rate with a solid build for outdoor sports, also because you'll want to put at least 1/2 your budget into lenses. a d3 with a kit lens would be missing the point.
john_flores2
look at the water- and cold-resistant Pentax K-7 matched with equally weather-resistant zooms.

For $2k you can get the K-7 and either the DA* 16-50/F2.8 or DA* 50-135/F2.8 OR both weather-resistant kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) plus a flash.

For $5k you can get the K-7, the DA* 16-50/F2.8, the DA* 50-135/F2.8 and the DA* 60-250/F4 and even have money left over for a battery grip and flash.
