Anyone know anything about a Ricoh Super Shot Camera?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine gave me a Ricoh Super Shot camera and I can't seem to find a lot of information on it. It's in good shape, it's been sitting in a police property room for 30+ years and has not seen a lot of action. Seems to work, I need a battery for it [god knows where I'll find one] but I was just wondering if anyone out here is able to shed a little light on for me. I'd like to shoot with it [looks like it would be fun] and thanks for the help!

Funny, I Googled "Ricoh Super Shot" and found lots of information, including a downloadable user manual from Mr. Butkus.

It is a Japanese rangefinder from 1965. It takes a 1.35v mercury battery, so a #675 hearing aid battery (1.4v) should work.

For other battery options, check the archives for "mercury battery replacement".

It should be a fun shooter.

The Ricoh Super Shot has some features not common. One is that the film advance is spring driven. Also has a unique focus aid system, you can see a rombus in the viewfinder and should be adjusted to the subject head size.
I have one with the lens with maximum aperture of f2.4.
Try it, is a nice camera.

I did do a Google search, but I did not find a lot of info for people using the camera or if it is worth anything. I found a battery, now I just got to wait for it to get here in the mail. This camera says it has a max aperture of F1.7 did they make these in different models?

In the link http://www.mattdentonphoto.com/cameras/ricoh_supershot.html
There is one with the same lens as your camera. So I guess there are at leat these two versions,
I dont believe it has a high value, it is not sought by users or collectors. You can always look for the value of the last transactions in ebay to have an idea.
Good luck with your camera.

I've just got one of these, the 1.7 version. I was able to get the light meter working with a 625 battery plus a wad of aluminium foil. It won't fire the shutter however. Does anyone know if you can fire the shutter without a battery? I have yet to see my shutter do anything. Although I have seen the aperture change with light changes and the light inside the viewfinder lights up upon battery check. I know you have to have film in it to charge the shutter with wind on but I just get click whirr but no shutter action. Cheers

I think your problem with the shutter not working is that the shutter blades are also the aperture blades. In other words, the shutter blades only open a small amount depending on the amount of light the lens is looking at. If you fire the shutter with your finger placed over the light sensor at the top of the lens you will see the shutter/aperture blades move to full open.
The camera will only operate with a battery and a film installed and with the motor spring wound up. Keep the camera on Auto unless you are using flash. All this is explained in the Manual that can be downloaded for free.

Thanks for that Al, much appreciated. I did read the manula because it came with one (!). I didn't find it as clear as your explanation. I tyhink there's something wrong as its not doing anything at all now. Totally stuck, can't wind up or relsease the tension. I'll have to put it aside for the minute unitl i get some time.
