Wouter Willemse
I'd use a grey-card to take a reading, and/or use RAW.
The white balance is dependent on the temperature of the studio lights, which (as far as I know) should be known from the specifications of the lights.

eric friedemann
Julie, a good starting point- and maybe an ending point- is to determine the color temperature of your lights in degrees Kelvin, which should be stated in manuals for the lighting equipment. The D300 has a continuously variable white balance setting that allows you to dial in specific color temperatures in degrees Kelvin.

Color temperature of bulbs can vary as they get older. So you will need to do test-shooting and maybe some tweaking.
alan_goldhammer
Spend about $100 and get the new Passport. this way you will always have the correct white balance. In addition you can easily profile your camera as well. I've used this on several shoots already and it works wonderfully in the field.
