mahmud_javid
Hi,
After many months lying around in its case, I tried using my 80-200mm (mainly to test how it would balance on a new ballhead I was thinking of buying). To my horror, it will only focus between 6m to infinity. Less than 6m, it gives a high pitched squeal, and the foussing action seems jammed. In fact I cannot even use manual focus to move it to any distance less than 6m. I have moved the focus limiter switch to and fro without any success. Can anyone explain what has happened?
Sincerely,
MJ
robert_cooper3
The first thing I'd try is to clean the CPU contacts on the lens.
The high-pitched squeal could mean the internal focus motor is failing.
Will the lens "zoom" normally?
mahmud_javid
The lens is zooming normally. Nothing seems loose inside. Focussing helicoid seems jammed and I cannot move it to anything less than the 6m mark even manually. It was never dropped or subjected to shock.
robert_cooper3
I don't have anything more to add but I'd take/send it in to have it looked at by a Nikon authorized repair facility.

Hopefully, someone else may have an answer for you.
kk_hui
I've this exact problem happened to me once with my AF-S 80-200/2.8D ED. My local Nikon Service Centre fixed it while I waited. It took 20 mins or so in all and they charged me for a basic inspection fee. The technician told me that some parts were loose inside. It works perfectly ever since.
mahmud_javid
KK Hui,
I am suspecting the same, perhaps some small screw is loose. I feel much better after reading about your experience, I'll see what I can have done on Monday.
M Javid
