Eyes of Laura Mars

Eyes of Laura Mars

I was inspired to write this short introduction to this film from 1978 starring Faye Dunaway called "Eyes of Laura Mars" by someone on a photography forum that said that some of my imagery reminded them of the film. I had totally forgotten how affected I was by this film as I had not yet been a photographer, nor had I ever considered the profession at that time.

In watching this vignette about the film, I was struck by the mastery of the images being shown and it dawned on me that none of it was manipulated in Photoshop. That is how I learned photography, never considering, what will I do in post prod once the photo shoot was a wrap. Yes there might be a painted by hand fine paintbrush skin retouching and some dark room manipulation, but not at all what we are capable of doing in post production today.

Some of the images look like they were taken by Guy Bourdin or Helmut Newton. The models were definitely the Top Models of the epoch like Lisa Taylor in the outdoor location girls fight scene.

Some great lighting and great photography from a film that really did (and this is rare) depict an epoch in fashion that no longer exists.

Interesting movie Benjamin, I remember some of it. Also they used Hasselblads ;) My wife happened to be sitting here who is a very accomplished writer, so I bugged her about the "epooch" thing just for the sake of opinion, as I certainly have no clue, I had to look the word up. She said, "maybe not the best choice, but OK, not wrong, not the best". I still haven't a clue but it was fun getting her frank take on the matter.

epoch |ˈepək|
noun
a period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics : the Victorian epoch.
• the beginning of a distinctive period in the history of someone or something : Jewish reimmigration to Palestine marked an epoch in the history of Jewry.
• Geology a division of time that is a subdivision of a period and is itself subdivided into ages, corresponding to a series in chronostratigraphy : the Pliocene epoch.
• Astronomy an arbitrarily fixed date relative to which planetary or stellar measurements are expressed.
ORIGIN early 17th cent. (in the Latin form epocha; originally in the general sense of a date from which succeeding years are numbered): from modern Latin epocha, from Greek epokhē ‘stoppage, fixed point of time,’ from epekhein ‘stop, take up a position,’ from epi ‘upon, near to’ + ekhein ‘stay, be in a certain state.’

Why do people seem to get so easily offended by someone liking a movie and saying that it affected them in a positive way? I thought it was a good movie and had some very good photography in it. It also had some beautiful girls in it.

Gary. It seems you do not like David Hamilton's work. I always thought he was a master at what he did. It was always easy to pick out his style. I considered him to be very erotic, but never pornographic. I believe you are correct. There is a reason Pascal Dangin (and David Hamilton) makes bags of money. They are very good at what they do and there is a demand for what they do.

Nothing wrong with Rebecca Blake's work either. A fine and well respected photographer.

Ben, I'm familar w/ what it means, and normally used as a point of reference.

"Two centuries after epoch, man then invented fire". For example. Or a specific event, instead of a span. To me your first usage would be better suited to "time" (though that's so pedestrian) and the second usage I'd used "era". As it referances the whole span, which you are referring to.

When I watched the video it reminded me how attractive New York City was instead of now, boring! I recall when I saw the movie I thought it was a bad movie. But I think I will watch it again sit back watch the visuals, the scenery, the models or show I say actresses acting like models and the clothing. There could be some ideas for a theme for a photo shoot.

Actually, I found it a pretty silly, though funny, movie.

Photography and styling were obviously inspired by the likes of Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton, and the Charles Jourdin ads, but with the usual Hollywood flair turned into caricatures of the 'make love to the camera' type, the same kind that believes that every French photographer is a star in Paris and sleeping with the models before the shoot is a must ' to get a better connection' .

I started in fashion photography myself back then, and in those days encountered several fashion students and wannabe models and fashion photographers who drew ' inspiration' for their style and behaviour from that movies.

Fortunately things change, and looking back at this film makes a good laugh (' when we were young and silly' ) ...

BTW epoch isn't really such a 'strange' word in my (non native English) language area, maybe a bit old style and rustic, but I suppose that last description falls in the same category : - )
