markst33
Hi there,

I was wondering whhat peoples opinions on 2x convertors are. Are they a good idea. The fastest lens I have is a Nikkor 1.8 50mm lens but the others are 18-55 f3.5-4.5 and a sigma 70-200 f4.5. So a convertor would really be only good for the 50mm ? Am I right in thinking this ?

Ed_Ingold
Nikon tele-converters are intended for use on longer lenses only. Since they extend well into the base of the lens, there must be ample clearance. This excludes 50mm lenses (probably anything shorter than a 180/2.8) and consumer zoom lenses. You can use TCs with 80-200/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 zooms, and possibly others. Both the lens and converter could be severely damaged if not compatible. Auto-focus is retained only for AF-S lenses.
tommyinca
Only buy them (2XTC) if you have a 300/2.8, 400/2.8, 600/4. And ask them to throw it in for free :-)
jorge
Regarding the use of a 2x with a 50/1.8, you will be better off getting a cheap 100/2.8. It will give you better image quality at more or less the same price.
