Canon 70-200mm f/4 tripod collar and Elan 7E

I was considering a 70-200mm lens(either f/2.8 or f/4) I need the

ability to use the tripod collar on the f/4 lens with my BP-300

attached to my elan 7E. I think I remember reading somewhere that

this combo doesn't work b/c the tripod ring hits the battery pack.

Could someone please verify this for me...don't want to buy a lens

whose tripod collar I can't use.

<P>The Tripod Mount Ring A and EF 70-200 4L USM work fine on the Elan 7/BP-300 combo. The problem is that the BP-300 is incompatible with some heads, i.e., it's so small it doesn't clear some tripod heads. For example, the protruding front grip of the BP-300 hits the mounting plate of my Bogan 3265 Ball Head. I can mount the rig backwards and it works fine, but it's awkward with the release lever in the front. Most screw-in tripod heads are fine as the mount rides a little lower. Quick-release heads are prone to this problem because the QR plate elevates the camera slightly. With larger cameras such as the EOS 3 or A2 there is more clearance and, hence, no problem.</P>

Have you tried the Q-Top quick release system by Ideesign? It is brilliantly designed and beautifully made in Germany. It's only about 1 3/4 in. in diameter and is available from B&H or Adorama for $109. If you're interested, check it out on the Ideesign web site at http://www.ideesign.com if you're intersted. It might solve your problem.

FYI -MY BUDDY BOUGHT THE COLLAR AND IT INTERFERES WITH THE BOOSTER ON HIS EOS 3. HE HASN'T SHOWN ME BUT I DONT KNOW IF THERE'S A WAY AROUND IT...

Canon does not sell the tripod mount with the 70-200 4L because it is not really needed. Your camera will mount to a tripod with the lens attached with no problem. The lens is light. I use it with the EOS 3 and Elan 7 and have never needed a tripod mount.
