kris-bochenek
Hi all
I just took some test shots of my Sigma 70-200 I don't use it that often as I always though it produces soft images
Can you look at this photos and tell me if indeed they are soft or is it just me and my eyes :-)
I am posting full size images and their 200% crops

kris-bochenek
focus was on that big screw and nut
i had one more at 5.6 but looks just like f4. The one at f2.8 is soft but what do you think of the one at f4?

Thank you in advance
jose_rivera9
Kris, I have this lense and find that the images at f/2.8 are soft if shot without a tripod. Once you get to 5.6 it becomes solid. I have used the lense for just about everything and it did well at a yankees game at f/2.8 during action shots.
When you did your test shots, were you using a tripod?
kris-bochenek
Jose no tripod but pretty fast shutter and the lens was on the floor.
eric_arnold
your 2.8 looks a bit softer than the sigma 50-150 at 2.8. the good news is the bokeh is well-rounded and pleasant.

btw, test shots should always be on a tripod to eliminate any possibility of UE.
elliot1
"focus was on that big screw and nut" Perhaps it is just me but on the shots at f2.8 where the screw/nut appear slightly blurred, the gears appear pretty well focused. Perhaps you have a focus issue.
anthony_bez
I agree with Elliot the focus point seems to be in front of the nut at f2,8
kris-bochenek

What do you guys think about the f4 shot?
eric_arnold
the slightly blurred focus elliot sees could just be light reflecting off of silver, while the gears are more high-contrast and dont reflect light, which could give the appearance of blur.

at f/4 the nut, the bolt, and the gears are all equally sharp which would seem to eliminate the possibility of a focus issue. looks like it's just a bit soft wide open.
todd_reeves3
I think it is a issue more of lighting than anything else what was your shutter speed.. I have the HSM version of this lens and it is very fast in focus and tack sharp.
kris-bochenek
The 2.8 was 1/800 and f/4 was 1/500 and it is a HSM but the older version.
travishoover
The f4 shot appears about as sharp as anyone could expect, in my opinion. the f2.8 shot doesn't appear "soft" to me, it just appears that the focus was just slightly in front of the nut, as the end of the tubular part of the frame looks very sharp. the depth of field on the 2.8 shot appears very thin, giving the illusion of a soft shot. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

jose_rivera9
Kris and everyone, I believe all the reviews on this lense said it was a bit soft wide open. It isn't too bad but Kris redoes the test with a tripod we can truly see. Again, I have had this lense for over 8 months and it does very well. Especially the bokeh wide open.

kris-bochenek
f4 looks way sharper then f2.8 I realize that wide open will be soft(er) but does f4 seem sharp enough for you?
focus was on a bolt and the nut.
ramon_v__california_
tripod helped. without the tripod it seemed to be front focusing.

sharp enough at f/4 to me. and i agree, wonderful bokeh.
bsd230
f4 looks pretty sharp to me. That is the nice thing about a 2.8 lens, even if it isn't the sharpest wide open it looks excellent stopped down.
