"can I use a sunpak auto 555, with a d90?" - Yes, within the limitations that the 555 has.

You will not get any through the lens flash exposure automation, but the external flash thyristor automation will work just fine, if you pay attention to proper settings and do not exceed the max shutter X sync speed.

If you were getting beautiful pictures with Sunpak 555 and another camera ? then the same or better you can do with D90.

You will need PC to hot shoe adapter like Nikon AS-15 (Accessory Shoe) that costs about US$15 to $20, or any other generic for less.

Make sure turn off auto ISO on your camera.
You have choices: Manual flash and camera, or Aperture priority camera and Auto on 555 flash.

Set your camera to Aperture priority mode, and select smaller aperture so the auto shutter speed will not exceed the max sync of your camera that is 1/200. You will need to watch out to make sure that you do not shoot at faster shutter speed.

Make sure that 555 sliders are set to ISO and aperture are the same as in the camera Aperture and ISO, and you do not change them while shooting. And the flash is set to Auto position.

If you notice that the Aperture Priority requires shutter faster than the 1/200 sec. close a bit the lens (and aperture value on the flash do the same). Otherwise you may need to set the camera and flash both to manual modes, and figure aperture from distance and ISO on the flash sliders.

Good Luck!

...and your D90 in-camera pop-up flash is not used in the descriprion above. Once you slide in the AS-15 adapter into the camera hot shoe, the flash will not popup properly.

If you want to use both flashes together, then forget what was said above...it will be a different long subject... In this case instead of AS-15 you would need a remote optical slave to trigger remotely 555 by camera pop-up flash working in manual mode.
