walter_strong5
Well, my new 5D Mk II is on the way and now I'm wonder'n what I need to get next for it. In my camera bag is a 16-35 f/2.8, 35-70 f/4 IS, 65mm macro, 300mm f/4 IS and a 14mm Sigma f/2.8. Additionally I've got a 550 EX flash and extension tubes. I know I'm too wrapped up in equipment, maybe some workshops would serve me better. What do you suggest west of the Rockies?
enrique_bocanegra
You may want video editing lessons and a video mic. Also a fast prime lens.
rainer_t
-- "35-70 f/4 IS"
There is no such lens to my knowledge. Is this the old EF 35-70/3.5-4.5 ?
Eventually you want an "EF 24-105/4L IS" or an "EF 24-70/2.8L".
walter_strong5
HA! I don't know what I was think'n. I do indeed have the 24-105 f/4 IS! Yes, the video editing training and a video mic sound like good advice. Previously I tried to find the video mic in the 5D Mk II accessories but didn't see it. Where does one look for that item?

robin_sibson1
Two obvious equipment gaps are a telephoto zoom – the 70~200/4L IS is a brilliant lens, part of my 5DII carry-round kit with the 17~40 and 24~105 – and a conventional macro such as the 100/2.8USM to complement the specialist MP-E 65/2.8 (I assume that is the 65mm macro you mean).

bjscharp
Wait till you get the camera, shoot for 2 months, see what you're missing. If you're not missing anything, don't spend money. Seems to me you have a pretty complete set already.
jackaldridge
Look at the Zoom H4N for audio recording.
You might also search "5d MKii" on Vimeo.com...there's lots of stuff there about accessories for video, etc.
tolik_p.
Maybe a 50-1.4 or a 85-1.4 is nice. 24-70:2.8 is a great walking lens too.

mattb1
Time and taking a lot of photos. If you have been using a APC sensor camera you may have some bad habits that need to be broken or need some adjustments to the way you work. I'm still having some issues with it, but I'm not finding enough time to take photos.

Tripod? Camera bag? Seriously, you don't NEED much.

After some time you will notice what is missing, or you won't. I bought a 100-400 thinking I would miss the reach I had with a 80-200 on a APC camera. But, I did not need it. I'm still trying to justify having it, and I'm not finding much reason for it. Where the 80-200 is still gets used a lot. Maybe this summer I will use it, but so far its just more of an anchor than anything.
model mayhem gallery
Seems to me you have TOO MUCH equipment. Equipment does not make a good photographer taking pictures does. You already have more equipment than you can keep up with but no portfolio online. No offense, but it seems you are more a collector than a photographer. I have many lenses, but I have noticed as I develope more of a style of shooting the only lens I really use is my 17-40 F4L on my 30D. For my 5D Mark II I will probably upgrade to the 24-105 F4L and master shooting with that lens before moving on to something else. I don't shoot sports or birds far a way so i don't need F2.8 or 300MM lenses. If I want to isolate DOF I have an 85 1.2L but that is for speacial circumstances which rarely occur or something artist I may attempt.
Just my 2cents.
dan_grosz
You might also want to consider purchasing the EGD or EGS focusing screens.
walter_strong5
Minute, I agree. There's a lot in what you say. I alluded to this in my original post. Yeah, I need to actually TAKE MORE PICTURES! Dan, give me more information about those focusing screens. BTW, it rightously pisses me off that somebody with a bad case of OCD won't let me use multiplle exclamation points! I'm a Herb Caen fan from the old school!

philip_wilson
I assume that you have 77mm / 82mm polarizing filters and a few Cokin or similar ND grads / ND filters. They tend to be one of the best things to add.
