Hugh Van Es has died

<p>I did not know his name but certainly knew the photograph. He said he preferred his photos from Hamburger Hill. He was certainly willing to take risks to get photos. He flew into Kabul during the Soviet invasion but was detained at the airport, to be sent out. As he approached the stairs to the plane, he bolted and grabbed a taxi. He got detained again but there was no plane for him. He catured the first photos of the Soviet invasion (in 1979, I believe).</p>

<p> Some pictures stay with you forever. That picture was taken around the time I was first getting into photography and it made me try harder at it.</p>
