eric_francis1
So, I got the Targus Pro Battery grip for my Nikon D40. Its great, but as I knew, the camera, with the grip on the bottom, forces the camera to lean foward when a lens is attached. This is probably a super dumb question, but I just want to make sure, is it ok to have the camera resting on the battery grip and lens? Will this damage the lens or camera?
Thanks!
Matt Laur
It's fine. Just set it down gently. If you're using a lens that has a plastic mount (say, the 18-135), be all the more gentle. But not to worry about that rig bearing its own weight when resting like that. Mine are always doing that.
stanleys
I lay mine on its back. That way there's no stress on the lens mount.
eric_francis1
Like Stanley has said, is it safe to lay the camera on its back (viewfinder down on table)? All my lenses have plastic mounts, so I'm a bit more worried now!
Matt Laur
Well, you CAN lay it on its back, but you risk scratching up the rear display. And it's not such a good habit unless you religiously keep your lenscap in place. Truly, I wouldn't sweat just letting it rest on the base of the grip, tipped forward a bit. I only mentioned the plastic mount because it's going to be a bit more fragile when the camera takes a substantial shock - it's not going to have any problem just sitting there, with its center of gravity just a bit forward like that. Really. Don't worry about it. You just want to minimize the lumps and bumps (which is a good habit regardless).
frankie_frank1
It really defects the purpose of a very portable camera D40 to have a big battery grip on the bottom. It is better and cheaper to have a spare battery fully charge to carry along.
eric_francis1
Ok Matt, so I can let it sit leaning on the lens every if it has a plastic mount and even over a long period of time doing that (for example like every day for a year) is not going to weaken or break the mounts? Sorry I'm being so anal about this. With the economy so bad, I don't want to pay to fix things (when I get spending money for luxuries , I want to spend it on new gear).

Thanks
ramon_v__california_
don't worry so much, eric. it will be okay even with an sb-800 on the d40. just be gentle setting the camera down on any surface. as matt has mentioned, you should be more concerned with scratches on your lcd screen and coke or spaghetti on your lens.
mike_reed2
I have a D40x and the Targus battery grip. I've found when placing the camera on its back, the battery grip and the rubber eye cup on the D40x hold the lcd screen off the surface. Assuming the surface is relatively flat.
