The 1950`s Elmar is like the DR/Rigid Summicron less F 2.0.
The last version, recently discontinued, is very sharp like the current Summicron and has less flare than the old. This one lives on my my M camera most of the time, a 35 `Cron in the bag along with a 90 4.0 current version.
If you wanted F2, wait for a Summicron. Otherwise you will be happy.

Which Elmar, what condition? For the last version, £250 is an 'ok' price - UK dealers would charge around £350-395 for a minty one. For an older 1960's chrome 50mm f2.8 the price seems rather high; a UK dealer would be asking around £199-299 (depending on condition). Quality-wise all Elmars are really fine lenses, but a Summicron would be better in many respects; however, their prices are in another league.
