robert_hooper1
Okay, so I've been looking at vintage Leica M cases on eBay for the "new" Leica M2 that may soon be in my future, and have noticed a spacer within most cases on the left side, (camera rear vantage point), with a mysterious vertical, narrow, storage slot in it. What in the world is that slot for?

robert meier
I have one of those cases, and I've wondered about that too.
robert_hooper1
Thats a good guess Jay, but I would think the box top could irretrievably burry itself in there.

However, although I haven't tried it, it looks like a stick of gum would fit perfectly. ;-)
carol_christopher
I think that is for the extra memory cards, isn't it? <grin>
david_maxwell2
Based on the cae I have that came with my M2, I'm pretty sure the slot is for the plastic incident light cover for the MC (selenium) meter - the front part of the case should be large enough to allow the camera and meter to be covered.
robert_hooper1
I like that hypothesis, Carol. Even back then, Leica was working on a digital back, and designing camera cases to hold the inevitably necessary memory cards! Never under estimate German engineering. Good one!

And wouldn't that be wunderbar if Leica did come out with a compatible digital back for vintage Leica M bodies. Wow!

robert_hooper1
But David, the slot looks curved to me, not flat. Still you could be right. Somewhere out there, is the answer.

I'd ask Sherry Krauter, but she is so busy, and I have been bugging her with so many questions lately, I'm afraid of alienating her.
alex_lofquist
On some of the screw mount Leica leather cases there was a pocket inside the rear of the case which held a white matte plastic card, about 1 1/4 inches by about 2 inches, for you to write pertainant information such as film type or special exposure instructions.
subhash_tiwari
In the back of the Canon LTM cases there is a slot that keeeps a flat plastic card that you use to guide film during loading, by wedging it between the film and the back.
robert_hooper1
Subhash,

That makes me wonder if the slot in the Leica case could be for a film leader retrieval device? You know, it's one of those flat metal tools that you insert into the opening of a film cassette and pull out a film leader inadvertently rolled all the way in.
