EOS 600/630 Excessive Battery Drain

Hi!

I've had my EOS600 for 13 years now and it's been the most reliable

camera I've ever used. This seems to be a common opinion for all

EOS6XX when I read the Q&A.

However, I just came back from a holiday (where I dropped the camera

once) and didn't use it for about a month after my return, when I

noticed the battery was empty. I thought that was strange as I just

replaced it. Bought a new one and again, about three weeks later, the

battery is empty - not a single use.

Whilst I haven't measured the actual current drain, I did read one

comment in this forum that another person had the same problem and

CANON could not fix it.

Can ANYONE help to let me know what the problem is? I don't want to

change cameras ...

Many thanks!

Cheers,

Claus.

I had the same problem ant this was the answer that a community member gave me

Jose, check the battery compartment- take out the batteries, and use some very little alcohol to clean the metal contacts at the top, sometimes plain dirt leads to a shortcut, and you then waste your batteries (even when the body is left closed). Use 100% grade alcohol, and wake for it to dissolve into the air before your try turning the camera on again.

Hi all!

Thanks for the helpful replies.

Firstly, the EL backlight was not working.

Then I took the camera apart and removed the white wire (TP3 on the power convertor board in the base of the camera) which feeds the EL backlight with the required supply voltage (does anyone konw what this is?). The quiescent current has returned to 20uA (was 7.5 to 10mA). Success!

Now, I need a new EL backlight for the LCD.

Can anyone tell me where I can get that?

I hear the EOS-1 part fits - is that true?

Thanks.

Claus.

Last month had my EOS RT (same basic body as the EOS 600/630) fixed for the problem that you described. The repair shop (<A HREF="http://www.horizon-electronics.com/">http://www.horizon-electronics.com/</a>) replaced the RT backlight panel with an EOS-1 panel - total cost, about $110. The tech told me that the EOS-1 panel needs a minor modification in order to fit into the RT.
