sukumaran_r
Was keen to understand from pro-members in the forum on the impact (i.e pixel quality, size etc),of using the following Nikon lenses on a full format camera such as D 700: (i) my newer Nikon lenses marked DX (ii) my favorite but older Nikon lenses marked with a D such as 50 mm 1: 1.4 D, 85mm 1:1.4 D and 50 mm 1:1.8 D. Thank you.
ilkka_nissila
I'm not a pro, but I'll comment anyway.;-) i) There's no point in using DX lenses on the D700 except in emergency. The quality of using the lens on a current DX camera will be better. ii) At least the 85/1.4 and 50/1.8 AF-D work superbly on the D700. I don't have the 50/1.4 AF-D any more but I don't think there should be any problem with that either.
seismiccwave
I am not a pro either. 1) The Nikon DX lens are designed for the cropped sensor body such as the D60/80/90/300. The D700 is a full frame body. You may use the DX lens on the D700 body but you will lose a bit of pixels. The D700 sensor has 12 megapixel with the DX lens you get about 6 mega pixels left on the image. 2) The D on the lens meant that the computer chip has distance information communicated to the camera body. It is helpful when you use a flash.
terry foster
Hi if you use a DX Lens on thje D700 it crops the image to centre of censor to about 5 milllion pixels.
sven keil
Same to me - I am not a pro. Confirming what has been said: 85/f14 does excellent, did not test the 50mm/f18 yet, but shot around extensively with the AF-50mm/f14 (non-D), and could not identify major issues. Check out http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html - Bjørn commented on,and tested, a lot of lenses (rating them from poor=1 to 5=excellent) on different bodies (look for D3 ratings, lenses should perform similar on D700)
wpahnelas
i am a professed amateur, but i concur with the above postings. i would add that i've never mounted a DX lens on my D700, as this is not the reason one acquires an FX body. also, please be advised that in addition to the "D" lenses, there are a large number of vintage MF lenses that perform superbly on the D700. if you are looking to enlarge your arsenal of lenses, this is one avenue to pursue. ronald_moravec1
I have used DX zooms on my D700 because I have no FX zooms. They work quite well, but you are better off getting FX lenses. If you work at higher ISO`s, you are better off using DX lenses on a D700 rather than a D200 or older body. Do not be put off by 5 MP. The 50 and 85 will be just fine on a D700 in DX or FX mode. I use mostly old AiS on my D700 and some DX zooms. They do not scream 5 MP.
