black_bishop
Hi, im gonna buy a canon 50d, and i have a few old lenses that i used on a Canon eos elan II E, and i wanna know if they will work fast and ok with a canon 50d ( the right thing would be to try them with the camera, but i cant have the chance, someone will bring me the camera from usa next year) the lenses are a sigma dl zoom 75- 300 4-5.6 and sigma 100-300 4-5.6. Do they need some software ? are they gonna work as fast as they used to do with the film eos ? thanks in advance
tomwatt
EF mount lenses should work fine on any EF mount camera... so yes.
PuppyDigs
All Canon EF lenses will work perfectly on your new 50D. The operating instructions in Sigma ROM is reverse engineered and an update is normally needed for older lenses to work with current EOS models. If these Sigma lenses are not in production you have no hope of a ROM update. I once owned 6 Sigma optics from the mid to late 90s and only one had a ROM update available when I bought an Elan 7E in 2001. The other 5 I gave away since they had no resell value. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
neill_farmer2
Both lenses are Sigma from the 1990s? I don't think such old Sigma lenses will work on recent Canon cameras and Sigma probably doesn't rechip these anymore. If you purchased the lenses in the 2000s they will probably be alright. chrisjb
The way to find out is to contact Sigma and give them the models and serial no`s on the lenses, I doubt they will upgrade unless the lens is current, even some later ones such as I had an EX 15 30 rechipped to go from D30 to 20D :)

manuel barrera houston,
Some sigma lens will work others will not, normally they will give you error 99. For instance my 400 APO Sigma will only work properly with my 1D and my 1DS, if the lens are no longer made in all probability Sigma will not re chip. chrisjb
Another thing, often if these lenses give error 99, some work ok wide open..HTH
