alan_rockwood
My wife's family has a large collection of very old glass stereo slides of enormous personal value and possible historical value. We would like to scan these to preserve them in the event that the originals become lost or damaged. What would be the best scanner for the job? A drum scanner is obviously not suitable, and I am sure that a conventional film scanner would not work either. That leaves a flat-bed scanner. I am thinking that either an Epson V750 or a Microtek M1 might work best. Of these two, or also considering any other possibilities, what would be best? The negative holder is an obvious issue to consider.
martijn_houtman
I've heard people "scanning" slides by using a decent macro lens on a (D)SLR. Get some diffuse backlighting and you're set, right?
alan_rockwood
Martijn, Thank you for the idea. However, I'm looking for something a little higher quality than copying with a DSLR if possible. The sizes of these slides are considerably larger than 35mm, so they have a lot of megapixel equivalents, more than a DSLR has.
greg lockrey
Either the 750V or Microtek M1 will fit the bill. The M1 is said to render a better gamma range especially in low end zones. but it is also said to be a more fragile machine. I have the 750V and scan stereo slides (albeit 35mm and 120 film) just fine. You can custom size your scanning with either machine.
