jackson_aw
Hi guys, i've recently abandoned a mamiya rb67 for a gs-1. It's light, less lens problems and its light. I hate carryingthe rb. Anyway i just wanna know how gs-1 users compose and take vertical shots. Of course there's the rotating prism, but is that the only way out? :(
erie_patsellis
Out of curiosity, and not to second guess your choice, what spceific problems did you encounter with the RB?
User_502260
I use the GS-1 with the plain prism and a Speed Grip. I rotate the camera 90 degrees to the left and I am ready for vertical shooting. If you shoot all day that way your hands will feel the strain. With 35mm cameras I usually rotate the camera 90 degrees to the right but this is not comfortable with the GS-1. The GS-1 is easier to use hand held than an RB but lenses for the RB are more plentiful and the RB is an excellent studio camera.
richard baznik
I use the same technique as Jeff, but my prism is an AE. Having the speed grip at the top when shooting hand-held is also more convenient if you're using on-camera flash.
jackson_aw
erie: no worries. :) RB did not give me any problems at all, its a great camera and with the rotating back, there's nothing more you can ask for. The mamiya lenses i had are filled with all kind of crap in it but the end results are still pretty stunning. The reason for the change was that i'll be doing abit of travelling and the weight is an issue for me, thus the gs-1. jeff/richard: oic, so the prism is pretty crucial...thanks! :)
nathancraver
I use my GS-1 vertically quite often. I use Speed Grip and regular AE Prism. It's not uncomfortable for me and I can't justify spending extra money for the rotary prism.
brianam
this may qualify as a start-aleck answer, but: Travelling + 6x7cm film = Mamiya 7. Not an RB or GS-1. I should think the concessions made going by rangefinder vs. SLR *for traveling* are worth it. ...just a thought.
